Exploring Curcuma (Turmeric)-Based Supplements and Their Impact
Exploring Curcuma (Turmeric)-Based Supplements and Their Impact on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
At Ticho Eye Associates (TEA), we are always looking for ways to help our patients maintain optimal eye health. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults, but there is growing evidence that certain nutritional supplements may play a role in preventing or slowing its progression. One such supplement is curcuma, commonly known as turmeric, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The Potential of Curcuma-Based Nutritional Supplements (CBNS)
Recent research published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests that curcuma-based nutritional supplements (CBNS) may help reduce the risk of developing AMD or its progression to more advanced stages. Researchers from Baylor reported that CBNS were associated with lower rates of nonexudative AMD, advanced nonexudative AMD or geographic atrophy (GA), exudative AMD, blindness, and even the need for intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy. Patients who took CBNS had significantly lower relative risks (RR) for these outcomes compared to those who did not use the supplements, with benefits seen in older age groups as well.
The study, which analyzed a large cohort of patients, demonstrated that CBNS use could be a promising option for those looking to support their eye health, particularly for individuals with a history of early-stage AMD.
Why TEA Doctors Recommend Preventative Measures
At Ticho Eye Associates, we have extensive experience diagnosing and treating AMD. Our doctors are also well-versed in low-vision rehabilitation techniques and regularly advise our patients on preventative strategies for maintaining good eye health. Along with curcuma-based supplements, we recommend a variety of lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet, regular eye exams, and specific interventions to help manage the progression of AMD.
While the findings of the CBNS study are exciting, it’s important to approach the results with cautious optimism. The protective effects of CBNS observed in the study are significant, but they may be influenced by other factors. For example, individuals who use CBNS may also be more likely to follow healthier lifestyle habits, which could contribute to the observed benefits. To fully understand the role of CBNS in preventing or slowing AMD progression, more rigorous research, including randomized clinical trials, is needed. At Ticho Eye Associates, we continue to explore emerging treatments while emphasizing the importance of well-established preventative measures like regular eye exams, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking.

The Role of AREDS-2 in AMD Prevention
In addition to exploring curcuma-based supplements, it's important to mention the role of the AREDS-2 study, which investigated the effects of a specific combination of vitamins and minerals in preventing AMD progression. This study found that certain antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc, can help reduce the risk of advanced AMD in high-risk individuals.
